Portland Snow Day 2017

For the first time in my working life I called out from work because of snow. Portland got over a foot of snow and Oregon Department of Transportation said chains were required for any state roads. I have had my car less than a year so I do not have chains. The buses were all messed up from the snow as well, so I got to have a snow day as an adult.

Annie’s Donuts was open today, and they had plenty of room to park you skis. Also, they make the best classic donuts in town.

The snow makes everything so pretty. I just wish it wasn’t so dangerous. Portland is not equipped to deal with this much snow. Hopefully everyone stays safe and finds a way to enjoy the snow.

Hiking as Self Care

During the nice weather months in Oregon my favorite day off activity is to go hiking. To me it is the best form of self care. For anyone unfamiliar with the term self care, a basic definition is intentional actions to take care of your physical, mental, and emotional health. In today’s technology obsessed society I think everyone should try some type of activity that puts you back in nature. Hiking is my favorite because it gets me out of the city, I get to see beautiful scenery, and it is a good work out which has physical and mental benefits.

Like most mid-twenty-somethings I have a fairly stressful job that will hopefully lead to a bigger and better job. This has made me truly appreciate my days off. Since  I had today off, a friend and I decided to try a new hike in the Columbia Gorge.

Angel’s Rest

Our Hike started just before 10:30am.

We are both out of shape and had to take a few breaks. We are smiling big to convince ourselves that the hike will be worth it.

This bridge was tiny and adorable.

Great spot to sit and eat a snack on the hot rocks.

It is always nice to enjoy nature ad the relative peace & quiet.

Portland Fashion NXT

Sometimes I am a bit scattered. I think all adults are, but I openly admit it.

In October I went to Portland Fashion NXT with a dear friend from college. It takes place the week after Portland Fashion Week. It was super fun and I was very impressed with the show. This past week I found where I had saved the pictures from the show. Sorry they are so behind.

The Mayor of Portland and his wife gave the opening speech. They were very cute, and she is incredibly stylish.

This was the first designer, and my favorite, of the show. All the designers the first night of the show were from China. It was the second year of an exchange with Portland Fashion.

The theme of the collection of m favorite designer was peonies. These are my favorite flowers. I even have a tattoo of a red peony on my ribs.

The collection was very cohesive.

This middle garment was my favorite. This model was also my favorite. She had the best walk, and is breath-takingly beautiful. I found this picture on her istagram @modeltiffanysade

The final collection was all high quality cashmere garments. Every single thing looked cozy and warm, yet fashionable.

This was my favorite piece from that collection. It is what I imagine somebody would wear in a ski cabin/chalet.

Oregon Vacation 2015

This last week I felt incredibly blessed. I had 6 day off in a row, and I got to spend it with family that I rarely see. I had Aunties visit from Hawaii (and one from Seattle) so my Mom and I showed them all around Oregon. Family is the most important thing in the world to me, which is probably what made this the best vacation I have had in the last few years.

Oregon is so incredibly special, and showing if to others only makes me appreciate it even more.

Hood River and the Columbia Gorge are a must see for anyone visiting.

My Aunties from Hawaii were very shocked and how inexpensive and delicious produce is in Oregon.

Wine tasting is always a good plan in Oregon.

Multnomah Falls is the most visited tourist attraction in Oregon (and it is ADA friendly) so we had to go.

Lunch at Alameda Brew House.

Blue Star donuts as a snack during shopping. The Aunties wanted to try Voo Doo Donuts but we went here because they have better donuts, and very unique combinations.

The Oregon Garden is beautiful.

Da Gang

I was very excited for the sunshine, and the chilly temperature so I could wear my new sweater.

An evening stroll through the Portland Rose Garden.

This rose smelled especially pleasant.

Josephine loves meeting new people but she gets a little over excited at first.

I think having vacations to look forward to makes it much easier to get through anything difficult going on in life. Now my batteries are recharged so I can go back to reality.

Oregon Summer Ritual: River Days

One of my favorite things to do in the summer is go to the river. River trips and hiking are the best things about Oregon summers. Once it gets over 80 degrees out though, the river feels like the only good option on a day off.

My favorite river to go to is the Sandy. The water is cleaner than other options in the Portland area, and its beautiful.

Since river days are few and far between as an adult I like to make them count. Sunscreen, snack , and drinks are key components.

Jade and I always over pack.

I am so proud of Chloe (Left). She wore a 2 piece for the first time in 5 or 6 years. I think people should always wear whatever they feel like. Chloe got herself prepared by wearing the swim suit around her house a couple of times before wearing out. I think this is a great tip for anyone. We all had a great time and she was happy she wore the bikini.

It is really important if you bring children to the river to watch them. The water can be dangerous. Luckily we had 4 responsible adults to 1 child. Also, the 2 times he was naughty his Mom put him in 5 second time out and made him apologize and say why he was in time out.

If you live in Oregon you have to do at least one river trip a summer. There is something about it that just refreshes and recharges a person.

Female Body Positivity for All

I have noticed a disturbing  trend amongst women during my last 4 years working retail. Every day at my job I hear women saying negative things about their body, or another woman’s body. I find this incredibly sad. If you look on any social media site you can find disturbing, negative comments. This issue is really important to me, which is why I decided to write this post.

It took me until I was 23 years old to truly love my body.  Like many women I felt like I wasn’t attractive because I didn’t fit into the cookie-cutter mold. Also because I was bullied all of middle school and early high school. But eventually I accepted that I am a curvy woman and always will be. Having a big round butt is all the rage now, but 10 years ago that was not the case. Going through a journey of weight loss and improved physical fitness starting my Junior year of college helped me greatly. I whole heartedly believe that working out can help anyone’s body image. You might not love your body, but if you make it through a boot camp class or run a race you feel proud of your body. Finally learning to love my body was a huge accomplishment for me. If I can do it, after my self esteem issues and negative thinking from childhood, any one can do it.

This picture of me was taken in February 2015.

I want to put it out there that body shaming of any kind is wrong. People come in all shapes and sizes. Different people are attracted to different things. Phrases like “Thin is in” and “Real women have curves” both are detrimental to how women think. Being a real women happens in every shape. Real women don’t tear down others or make negative comments about anyone’s body. Real women are confident in themselves, even when they don’t think their body is perfect. I don’t think there is a single person alive who thinks their body is perfect, but you understand the point I am trying to make.

Criticizing women who get plastic surgery is also a form of body shaming. Plastic surgery is a personal choice. Unless the plastic surgery is getting done to your body, or you are taking care of the person, then it is none of your business. Plastic surgery is controversial, but I think there are many circumstances where it makes complete sense. I also think anyone getting any type of plastic surgery should meet with a shrink before hand, to make sure they aren’t doing it for a possibly detrimental reason. I have thought about getting a breast reduction and lift after having children, but that is far, far away.

There is a serious need for more positivity towards our bodies, and the bodies of other women. Positive self thought is a really important part of this. Learning to think positively about your life, and to banish the negative thoughts, is a priceless skill. Surrounding yourself with positive people is also incredibly helpful for body love and positivity. Below are some of my friends who also believe female body love and positivity is important.

I call Mataya my little sister even though we aren’t related. We grew up across the street from eachother our entire childhoods. She is such an inspiring young woman. I asked her to say a little bit about her body image, favorite feature, and the journey.

“Favorite body part is my butt. I’m curvy and proud of it! I’ve also been an athlete my entire life and have worked hard for my shape. I will never be a size 2, but I am happy and healthy. “

I met Tabitha years ago when I started working at retail. We have always been able to talk openly about our bodies and the struggles of being curvy. Tabitha is the only women I know who openly admits having breast augmentation. I love that she talks about it! When I asked about her journey and favorite body part she responded:

“I do love my legs, cellulite and all. Honestly not shaving my armpits has also gone a long way in helping me embrace my body the way it is rather than trying to fit into society’s mold of attractive. It was weird for me at first but now I’m proud of the fact that I had the balls to challenge the stereotype that women have to be body hair free in order to be pretty.”

I also met Elisabeth while working in retail. She is such an amazingly kind woman. One of the sweetest people I have ever met. She is always positive. Whenever we talk about body image topics she is very positive, and fully acknowledges not being the cookie-cutter image and still having the “I am awesome” attitude. When I brought up the idea for the post months ago she brought up “Why wouldn’t someone love their body? Its the only one you get.” I think that is something everyone could stand to be reminded of.

I meet Lydia through Mataya when we were all kids. She is so free spirited and fun loving. I can’t help but bear hug her every time I see her, that’s just the kind of energy she has. Lydia has done dance for much of her life and is very outdoorsy and active. She has always inspired me to create healthier habits in my life. I asked her to tell me a little about her body image journey and she said the following:

“Favorite feature is my calves. The only woman who has ever made me feel insecure about my own body is me. Loving your body is the best thing you can do for it!”

I choose these women because I know all of them well and know they all truly love their bodies. Every person, man or woman, can finds flaws with their physical form. It is important to not dwell on it. Nobody is perfect. Love your body, its the only one you have. It is important to take care of your body because it takes care of you. Living a healthy lifestyle (balanced diet, exercise, etc.) is always a good plan.

I hope this post helps some people, because it took me a long time to learn all of this. I hope everyone who reads this will give themselves a compliment, and compliment another person. There needs to be more positive energy surrounding our bodies. Small changes can make a big impact.

My Fashion Addiction: Part 1

I love fashion and clothing of all kinds. There are some items I enjoy more than others, and some that I  am addicted to buying. I can’t even completely explain why. The first addiction I have, and the most impractical, is bikinis.

I love bikinis. It may partly be because I only wear them during fun summer activities, like trips to the river. I only get to wear them about 3 months out of the year, but I like variety.

This is the second most recent addition to my collection. It is from Victoria’s Secret and was $80. I don’t normally like to spend that much, but this top has underside which I love. Under wire in a bikini top means less neck pain at the end of the day for me.

2015-05-20 14.07.30

I searched for 2 years to find the perfect red bikini. I found this one on The best part is it was on sale for $35. The brand is Pour Moi. I highly reccomend this brand for anyone who has a larger chest. They are well made and go into large cup sizes. Be careful when ordering because they use UK sizing.

2015-05-20 14.05.25

I purchased this bikini because it is simple, and I feel like black is a classic. Strapless is not my favorite. This one is from Victoria’s Secret and has under wire so it stays up pretty well.

2015-05-20 14.03.42

Another Victoria’s Secret bikini. I love the eggplant purple color. I think it is flattering even when I am my most pale. The last time I looked on their site I couldn’t find this style. I really hope they bring it back.

2015-05-20 14.04.49

This bikini was kind of an accident. The picture online looked red. It is in fact pink, but it isn’t super bright. It was also on sale for $39.50 when I bought it. This top has the same fit as the green one up top. If you find a style from Victoria’s Secret there are lots of slight variations available.

This is a La Playa bikini that I purchased from Brazilian bikini I had wanted a Brazilian style bikini since I was 16. I bought this last August for a trip to Vegas with a friend. The bottom is smaller than I expected, but I love it. After shipping and conversion the bikini cost $70.

2015-05-20 14.06.51

This bikini is from Hawaii. My Mom and I went on vacation in February and I got this. It is RVCA. Their bikinis run $60 to $90 , it completely depends on the style and where you purchase from.

I always think it is interesting to see what other people have in their closets. If nothing else after reading this, you can probably feel better about your own swimwear collection. I do admit it is kinda crazy to have this many bikinis, but I love them all.
